Sydney mother charged with allegedly poisoning child with epilepsy drugs

A young mother has been charged after police alleged she repeatedly poisoned her little boy with a prescription epilepsy drug.

Doctors called detectives after an 18-month-old from south-west Sydney was rushed to hospital in January.

Hospital staff found the infant had overdosed on Tegretol – and had not been prescribed the medicine.

After ‘exhaustive’ investigations, child abuse detectives from NSW State Crime Command arrested the boy’s mother, 20, at Lurnea about 7.30am on Wednesday.    

The woman was charged with seven counts of using poison to endanger life or inflict grievous bodily harm, police said in a statement. 

The woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was refused police bail to appear at Liverpool Local Court.

Tegretol is prescribed in tablet form and is prescribed to control the fits caused by epilepsy

‘The child has since been released from hospital and is currently in the care of relatives,’ the police statement said. 

Tegretol is sold in tablet form and contains the active ingredient Carbamazepine. 

It is prescribed to control the fits caused by epilepsy. It also sometimes prescribed to control mania and bipolar disorder.
