Look away, Sydney Swans fans who are sick of the stereotypes that brand your club as the ‘posh’ footy team of the AFL – new footage that reinforces the cliche is going viral.

For decades, the Swans faithful have been mocked by their southern rivals in Melbourne.

Working-class footy fans love to sledge the cashed-up Sydney supporters, accusing them of knowing plenty about social media influencing and which wine to drink at games, but very little about footy itself.

Now a video named ‘classic Swans fans’ has surfaced online and it has has given those Melbourne supporters plenty of ammunition.

While the Swans were playing at the SCG recently, a well-dressed young man wearing a Swans scarf was seen getting a beauty treatment in the stands.

The video shows a young woman applying what appears to be makeup to his face, giving him several touch-ups to the amusement of those around them.

It also created a big stir on social media, shared by a host of comedy pages including Brown Cardigan.

And didn’t the non-Sydney footy fanatics just love it.

‘That has confirmed every opinion I have about Swans supporters,’ one posted.

‘Why on earth would you do make up at the football?’ asked another.

‘Most Swans supporters go to the games for a fun night out. Couldn’t give a s*** if the Swans win or lose,’ another claimed.

Even Swans fans were left shaking their collective heads.

‘The hardest part of being a Swans fan is other Swans fans,’ one lamented.

Others pointed out that there is nothing wrong with a man wanting to look his best.

‘Why is not acceptable that men try and look good and likewise why is it acceptable to look and dress like a slob?’ one fan asked.

However, a commenter revealed that while the man was indeed piling on the makeup for vanity reasons, it was because he had copped a nasty knock playing footy earlier in the day.

‘This was actually a mate of ours,’ lifestyle website Man of Many posted on Instagram.

‘He genuinely had a really bad black eye from playing AFL that day for the UTS [University of Technology, Sydney] Bats.

‘The girls behind him wanted to fix it up for him. I copped a bloke sitting behind film it and it ended up on Brown Cardigan. He was devastated at the time. Thought his life was over.’

While the Swans may be regarded as the posh AFL club by many, the modern Sydney element to the club is only a fraction of its history.

The club began life as the South Melbourne Football Club in 1874, a founding member of the VFL, as the top flight was called back then.

It is one of the oldest football clubs of any code in the country and has a long and rich history that has seen it endure two World Wars and a depression.

The cultural history of South Melbourne is the envy of most sporting clubs in the country, and relocation did not change that. If anything, moving only made the brand stronger.

The Sydney Swans were formed in 1982 and since then have become more popular and more successful than most founding clubs that remain in Melbourne.

The Swans have produced more Brownlow Medal winners than any other VFL/AFL club and claimed premierships in 2005 and 2012, along with a host of grand final appearances.

And the club honours its roots, wearing the South Melbourne red V jersey for matches in Melbourne and have retained Bob Skilton House in Melbourne as a base for its loyal South Melbourne supporters.
