Sydney Swans star Dane Rampe comes up with a unique insult toward an umpire

It’s Dane Rant-e! Sydney Swans star baffles fans by branding umpire a ‘little girl’ before breaking age old AFL law by scaling a GOAL POST

  • Sydney Swans star Dane Rampe told an umpire ‘you talk like a little girl’ on Friday
  • The 28-year-old explained he couldn’t hear the official before delivering the line
  • The video was been shared on Twitter and was slammed by users as ‘sexist’
  • Rampe decided to scale goal post in brazen move that could have lost the game

Sydney Swans star Dane Rampe has baffled fans by branding umpire a ‘little girl’ before breaking age old AFL law by scaling a goal post.

The 28-year-old was tackled to the ground at the Sydney Cricket Ground, in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, after taking a mark during Friday evening’s clash with Essendon.

But Rampe hadn’t heard the umpire’s call to ‘play on’ and began to question the official amid his confusion.

‘I can’t hear that,’ Rampe said.

‘You talk like a little girl.’

A snippet of the verbal altercation was shared to Twitter by AFL.com.au who wrote: ‘Dane Rampe had some words for the umpire’.

But the tweet has been met with criticism from fans arguing the insult did not need to be based on gender.

‘Not the right thing to say. Even if Rampe was frustrated, it makes it sound like being a girl is a bad thing, which is just insulting,’ one person said.

One person suggested it would be difficult to hear a little girls voice ‘over the roar of a crowd’, but the argument was counteracted.

‘So would a little boy’s voice. Rampe didn’t need to bring gender into it,’ the person said.

‘That’s so sexist,’ another tweeted.

‘Doesn’t need to be repeated @AFL,’ one person said.

‘Great message to send to all your up and coming @aflwomens players @AFL. Disgrace that you are tweeting this garbage #AFLSwansDons,’ tweeted another.

The controversial comment wasn’t the co-captains only moment in the spotlight on Friday evening.

Rampe could have cost his team their victory when he decided to latch onto the goal post and climb up it like Spiderman.

David Myers attempted to kick a 60 metre match-winning goal as a brazen Rampe scaled the post.

The kick feel short to the glory of the Swans squad – who won by a slim five points – but Rampe’s unsportsmanlike behaviour could have led to a free kick in front of the goal, snatching the game.

Field umpire Andre Gianfagna yelled at Rampe to ‘get down, get down’ – deciding to caution him instead of awarding a match-winning free kick to Essendon.

Gianfagna has been cleared of wrongdoing according to a report by the AFL umpires review.

Rule 17.11 states: ‘A Free Kick shall be awarded against a Player or Official who intentionally shakes a goal or behind post (either before or after a Player has disposed of the football).’

The Swans defeated Essendon 77 to 72 in Friday’s match.
