Sydney Swans suffer epic fail as they attempt to recreate ‘duck cake’ from Australian Women’s Weekly cookbook with hilarious results

The Sydney Swans marked their 150th birthday by tackling a task from an Australian Women’s Weekly cookbook.

On Thursday morning, the Swans shared their AFL and AFLW players’ hilarious attempts at recreating a ‘duck cake’ on Instagram.

The famous sponge is meant to feature a fluffy frosting, popcorn head, potato chip beak, red bow tie and eyes made with licorice and button chocolates.

But not all went according to plan.

‘Recreating this iconic cake for our 150th birthday as it’s as close to a swan as we could get,’ read the caption on the video.

To add to the fun, the Swans brought in celebrity chef Courtney Roulston to judge the cakes.

‘They all look like a very happy family,’ Roulston quipped.

‘This one lost its beak but still has its wings intact,’ she said of the first cake made by Will Hayward and Harry Cunningham.

She noted that the second cake was ‘probably the most looking like the picture,’ commending its wings and beak.

The third cake, while small, also received a nod of approval before she pointed to a fourth attempt, which ended up as a heap of crumbled cake and icing.

Ultimately, Roulston chose the second cake, crafted by Lucy McEvoy, as the winner.

However, she deemed all the efforts as ‘beautiful.’

The Women’s Weekly magazine responded with a cheeky comment, ‘Close enough!’ followed by a laughing emoji.

The rubber duck cake comes from the classic Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake recipe book, first published in 1980 – and has since become a family favourite.

In 2021, the duck made a huge comeback after appearing on Australian children’s animated series Bluey after Bingo requested it for her birthday and Bandit made it for her after following the recipe from the iconic cake book.
