Sydney woman charged with murder after lighting fire that killed her boyfriend

The ex-girlfriend of a man who was engulfed in flames after his granny flat was allegedly set on fire has been charged with murder amid allegations she tampered with the water supply.

Jeffrey Lindsell, 39, was at a pub with friends on the evening of October 6, 2017, before heading back to the Gymea, south Sydney, residence he shared with his elderly parents.

Hours later his parents watched on in horror as their son ran out of his burning flat while on fire.

Mr Lindsell died of his injuries in hospital two days later on October 9.

On Thursday, NSW Police charged 46-year-old Amanda Zukowski with murder.

She appeared at Newtown Local Court where she was formally refused bail to reappear at the same court on August 14.

In court, police alleged Zukowski tampered with the water supply and ‘deliberately’ lit the fire in the granny flat knowing Mr Lindsell was inside.

Detective Superintendent Linda Howlett in February described Mr Lindsell as a ‘loveable’ man who was held in high regard by his friends.

She said police believed someone was with Mr Lindsell inside the flat and knows how the fire started.
