Sydney woman Qian Liu not guilty of murdering husband

A Sydney woman who said her husband’s fatal stabbing was a tragic accident has walked free from court after being acquitted of his murder.

The NSW Supreme Court jury, which deliberated for less than two hours, also found restaurateur Qian Liu not guilty of manslaughter. 

Ms Liu, 35, had pleaded not guilty to murdering Han Lim Chin, 39, who was stabbed at their Riverwood granny flat on the night of January 3, 2016.

She testified that the couple argued and at one stage she grabbed a sheathed kitchen knife she had seen him put into his bumbag.

She said she had no intention of hurting him when she swung around towards him holding the knife – a movement she demonstrated to the jury, using a pen.

She said she had not realised the cover had come off the knife or that he had been stabbed.

Ms Liu told the jury about her husband’s unfounded suspicions of her having an affair with her personal trainer.

He had claimed she had been seen driving him to his home and served the trainer abalone soup but not her husband. 

After the verdicts were handed down on Thursday, Justice Clifton Hoeben commented that it was his first ‘not guilty’ verdict in 13 years of trials. 

Ms Liu appeared in good spirits after learning her fate on Thursday afternoon, flashing a smile for reporters waiting outside court.
