Sydney’s 10 most expensive homes 2017

Nearly 400 million dollars was spent on just 10 homes in Sydney this year.

And, unlike previous years, real estate experts told Domain most of the homes went to Australians.

The Eastern Suburbs was the top area for multi-million dollar purchases, with all top ten sales occurring in the area.

Elaine, the Point Piper estate which has housed the Fairfax family since 1891, topped the list, selling for $71million to tech billionaire Scott Farquhar, 37, in April.

The three-storey, seven bedroom home looks down upon Seven Shillings Beach and boasts a grass tennis court and stunning harbour views.

Farquhar’s extravagant purchase broke the national record for a house sale.

Singaporean tycoon C.K. Ow came close to the title with the recent sale of his six-bedroom Vaucluse home this week.

The stunning waterfront home was purchased more than 20 years ago for just over $7million, and the development mogul made a tidy profit of $60million when the home went up for sale.

A local family have purchased the home, which includes a library, gym, boathouse and a pub, on Sunday, Domain reported.

Just last week, luxury car importer Neville Crichton paid $45 million to move in next door to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

The beachfront mansion is the fourth home Mr Crichton has purchased in the area this year, adding up to $160million worth of sales.

Despite its high price, the home isn’t completed, with massive renovations still underway from the previous owners.

In October, Andrew Potter, who works in property investment, also purchased a Point Piper mansion.

His $36million purchase of the Wolseley Road home was the fourth-highest sale in Sydney for the year.

The property boasts a harbourside swimming pool and, of course, phenomenal views of the iconic bridge.

Mr Potter purchased his Point Piper mansion off Mr Crichton, who had bought it just months earlier for $33million.

The car dealer made a tidy $3million profit on the home when he sold it off the market to Mr Potter.

Previously, the home had been home to Lachlan and Sarah Murdoch, before it was sold to mining engineer Gary Zamel and his wife Karyn in 2005.

A property in Darling Point was the sixth most expensive property sold in Sydney this year after it went for more than $30million in July.

The home was purchased by property magnate John Roth and his wife Jillian Segal, who live in the house directly behind it.

Mr Roth and Ms Segal paid less than a million dollars for their original slice of paradise in 1986, showing how steeply property prices in the area have risen.

In July, another waterfront home sold for $30million in Rose Bay, also in Sydney’s exclusive east.

The property was purchased by Samira Jeihooni, wife of property developer Arash Tavakoli.

Reports claim the property, which belonged to the late urban development expert Sonja Lyneham will likely be torn down and rebuilt.

In a move that will shock the average home-buyer, property consisting mostly of wharves and a small boat shed sold for $30million in Point Piper.

The 2,000 square metre package includes four marina bays in Sydney Harbour and a swimming pool.

In 1958, the wealthy O’Neil family snatched the property up for a bargain, paying only £9,000 for the land. They later added the waterfront, spending a measly $21,500 in 1973.
