A famous Aussie beach has been closed until further notice after mysterious ball-shaped debris washed up along the shore.
Coogee Beach in Sydney’s east was immediately shut down after lifeguards came across the worring discovery on Tuesday afternoon.
Environmental officers collected samples of the black debris for testing and the incident has been reported to the NSW Environment Protection Authority and BeachWatch NSW.
Beachgoers are urged to avoid the vicinity and to not touch the debris as the clean-up and investigations continue.
‘Council is investigating the origin and composition of the material, which has the appearance of dark spheres,’ a Randwick Council statement said.
The debris is yet to be officially identified but could be ‘tar balls’, which are formed when oil comes into contact with debris and water.

It’s understood Coogee is the only impacted beach at this stage.
‘Council is currently arranging for the material to be safely removed from the beach and is inspecting other nearby beaches,’ the statement added.
Coogee will remain closed until authorities can work out what the substance is.
‘Crews are working to safely remove the material under supervision of an occupational hygienist and we are still awaiting results of tests,’ a council spokesman told Daily Mail Australia on Tuesday night.
