Travel-starved Aussies can experience a little taste of Mexico without leaving the country while waiting for the borders to open at a new Tulum inspired bar and restaurant. 

Foodies have been flocking to the Instagram-worthy Alegre bar and dining restaurant on King Street Wharf in Sydney’s Darling Harbour. 

With white rendered and cobbled sandstone walls, green plants and cacti throughout, and soft wooden textures, Alegre oozes holiday vibes and offers a menu of Mexican-fusion dishes and cocktails.

The Lamb Barbacoa is a centuries-old dish where the meat is wrapped in banana leaves and placed in a the pot with sauce which sealed with tortilla dough and lowered into a firepit. 

Other menu favourites include 300g Jack’s Creek sirloin, crispy skin half duck, Mayan spiced king prawns and gourmet tacos and all main are cooked in a charcoal jasper oven.

Late last year, Melbourne got its own slice of the Mediterranean when the refurbished Golden Fleece bar opened. 

The Greek inspired bar and restaurant in South Melbourne features a stunning fit out to make you feel like you’re on a Mediterranean holiday with white rendered walls, colourful mosaic details and curved archways decorated with ceramic pots and cacti.

Serving a range of wines, beers and signature cocktails, the Golden Fleece has two chic floors of dining space with a rooftop terrace on the upper level and its own onsite bottle shop.

The bottle shop has a subscription service where you can order your favourite wines, cocktails and beers delivered to your door each month.  

Guests can order from the Greek-inspired menu of eclectic pizzas, fresh pastas, and a tapas menu including saganaki, salt and pepper calamari, white anchovies, arancini, house olives, bread, and dips. 

Isaac Constantine and Zachary Riggs who foundered the Chapel Street dive bar, Two Wrongs, are the brains behind the new Greek eatery.
