Sylvia Jeffreys has spoken about her controversial sacking from the Today Show back in late 2018.

The star, 36, who worked as a newsreader on the show, described being axed from Today as a ‘difficult time’.

Sylvia was hugely popular on the program but was let go after a shake-up that included the removal of her brother-in-law, Karl Stefanovic.

‘It’s really sweet of Karl to acknowledge how hard that was for everyone. He is a big softie and he feels it,’ she told Stellar magazine.

‘We’ve had our own private conversations about that. And I know how he feels because it was hard for everyone; we all had jobs that we loved then.’

Sylvia continued: ‘But this is the gig. It’s public and sometimes that means that there are some really weird forces at play when it comes to decisions around what we do and where we are and who we work with.

‘It was really challenging, but I always look for the silver linings and this is how I survive things.’

The presenter said she had ‘amazing support’ from her husband Peter Stefanovic and he helped her get through it.

She explained she also had personal challenges at the time as she had been trying to fall pregnant and ‘there was a lot going on for us.’

After leaving Today in 2018, Sylvia began co-hosting Today Extra alongside David Campbell, replacing Sonia Kruger who previously had the role.

‘It can be frustrating when things aren’t going to plan. But that’s life. You just take the good with the bad,’ she explained to TV Week in 2020.

‘But David puts up with me showing him baby videos every morning and he does so with great enthusiasm. I couldn’t ask for a more generous co-host,’ she added.

Sylvia announced her departure from the Today show in December 2018, after four years as a newsreader for the breakfast program.

In a statement to 9Honey at the time, Sylvia insisted she was ‘excited’ about the future, having first made her debut on Today in 2014.

The news of her departure from Today came a week after her husband, Peter Stefanovic, was axed from the network altogether.

Peter had been at Nine for 15 years, serving as foreign correspondent and co-host of Weekend Today.

Sylvia and her husband now have two children: Oscar, five, and Henry, four.
