Taiwanese politician throws water flasks at his opposition

Taiwan’s Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) legislator Sra Kacaw was seen throwing flasks to the stage at the parliament in Taipei two days ago.

The incident occurred after his opposition lawmakers challenged if ‘it’s his first day as legislator’ and if ‘he had cared for Taiwanese aborigines’.

The discussion was about the controversial Act on Promoting Transitional Justice, which aims to remove authoritarian-era symbols and retry cases of injustice from that era.

The law was passed by the Legislative Yuan on December 5.

Taiwanese legislator Sra Kacaw gets angry after being questioned by his opposition lawmaker

Video emerged showing Mr Sra grabbing thermal flasks in the parliament and furiously throwing it towards the stage and towards his opposition.

The incident sparked as the Chinese Nationalist Party (CNP) suggested to consider the era to include the time when Taiwan was under Japan’s rule between 1895 and 1945, according to FTV News.

Mr Sra , who was elected as legislator since 2012, accused the new law of neglecting atrocities committed against the island’s aboriginal peoples during the same period.

However, he was being questioned by Wu Jingjui, a lawmaker from the opposition, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) if ‘he was in his first day as a legislator’ and ‘he had cared about Taiwanese aborigines of all times’.

Mr Sra was infuriated as he left the stage. He grabbed a few thermal flasks on the table and hurled it in the legislative hall.

He made a public apology for his action later.

The transitional justice law was passed on the same day, with DPP chairwoman and President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, praising the legislation as a “milestone” for the island’s democracy, reported Focus Taiwan.

President Tsai said the transitional justice system will review and address the legacy of injustices left by former Chinese Nationalist Party administrations.

It will allow the country to turn over a new leaf, shedding the painful memories that have resulted in hatred amongst different groups of people in the nation.
