What is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)?

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder caused by very stressful, frightening or distressing events.

People with PTSD often suffer nightmares and flashbacks to the traumatic event and can experience insomnia and an inability to concentrate.

Symptoms are often severe enough to have a serious impact on the person’s day-to-day life, and can emerge straight after the traumatic event or years later.

PTSD is thought to affect about one in every three people who have a traumatic experience, and was first documented in the First World War in soldiers with shell shock.

People who are worried they have PTSD should visit their GP, who could recommend a course of psychotherapy or anti-depressants, the NHS say.

The soap star also shed light on approaching menopause and co-parenting with her California-based ex-husband Tom Ellis as she admitted she’s been left to raise her kids with her nanny due to travel restrictions.

Detailing her girls’ opinions on marriage, the thespian shared: ‘They always say, ”You two are not getting married”. They don’t like the idea of it, but that’s fine because we’re not desperate to do it. I feel like I’ve done it so I’m not that bothered really.

‘My daughters were excited by him moving in, but they wouldn’t like us to get married — they’d hate that. It’s a very liberating place to be when you don’t need to get married and you don’t need to have kids.’

The media personality went on to gush about her ‘very supportive’ partner, who she’s been dating for over two years.

Tamzin and actor Ellis, 41, tied the knot in 2006 and divorced eight years later after it was alleged that he had an affair with Lost actress Emilie de Ravin.

The Ilford native credited her children’s longtime nanny for helping her look after Florence and Marnie.

She told  The Sun’s Fabulous magazine:  ‘She’s really who I’m co-parenting with and have done for a very long time. She’s like the sensible head. I can go to her with pretty much anything and she knows them so well.’

Elsewhere in the discussion, the New Tricks star confessed she fears being a ‘horrifically hormonal’ mother to her children as she’s beginning to experience symptoms of the menopause, including insomnia and ‘sparks of fiery rage’.

Tamzin added that she wants to ‘be a nice person’ when she officially reaches that period, and praised her YouTube comedy series Dun Breedin’ for helping her come to terms with the change in her life.
