Tasmania braces for a snap three-day lockdown after NSW man brought Covid into the island state

Tasmania’s capital, Hobart, is expected to be plunged into a snap-three day lockdown on Friday afternoon with the state cabinet locked in crisis meetings. 

Premier Peter Gutwein ‘will provide information regarding further measures associated with the current Covid situation in southern Tasmania’ at 2.30pm local time, a statement said. 

A NSW man, 31, arrived in the state on Monday evening and tested positive on Wednesday.

Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein is expected to make an announcement on Friday afternoon 

The man allegedly broke out of quarantine and was found at an address in the city’s outer north at 4.45pm on Tuesday.

In a statement, Mr Gutwein said: ‘At a time when the vast majority of Tasmanians are doing the right thing, I cannot stress how deeply disappointing it is for someone to blatantly ignore the rules and put others at risk in this way.’

The man will be fined $3,000.
