Acclaimed Tasmanian Artist George Davis has died aged 94.
Davis, who is the father of Australian actress Essie Davis, is known for his paintings of Tasmanian birdlife, plants and landscapes.
One of his most renowned artworks is a large mosaic mural at the former ABC and Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music buildings in Hobart.
Davis was commissioned in 1961 to create the 19 metre mural after he won a design competition.
The mosaic is made up of 150,000 glass tiles and inspired the ABC logo.
His daughter Essie previously said she thought the mural was ‘a great work of art’.
‘I’ve always been extremely proud of my father’s work. He’s an extremely fine artist, master draftsman and a colourist, observer of nature and humankind,’ she told the ABC.
‘I think if you make a great work of art like that, you expect it to be forever because that’s how we remember culture.’

Davis was born in Hobart and went on to study in London with a Tasmanian Travelling Scholarship.
He held his art first exhibition in Hobart in 1951.
He was commissioned by the Tasmanian Arts Advisory Board for a series of drawings and paintings of Tasmania’s islands.
Davis had his work staged at the University of Tasmania in 1980 and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in 1988.
