A Tatler article on why Britain’s most eligible bachelors are choosing American wives over women from their own country has been slammed on social media.
The piece includes the claim that it is easier for upper-class men to have a bride from the US than pick a ‘girl from home with the ‘right background’.
It also includes the suggestion that British men prefer American women as they ‘have polished nails and brush our hair’, with their behaviour in the bedroom being another reason given.
The article, which was re-published amid the speculation over Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s engagement, has been widely criticised – with some suggesting they had been taken back to the 1950s.

The piece, which Tatler says was first published in 2015, was promoted on the publication’s official Twitter account an ‘Old Etonian’ quoted in the piece.
The tweet read: ‘For a lot of British chaps, it is easier to go out with a foreigner than to find a girl from home with the “right” background.’
Social media users were quick to react to the tweet, with some describing it as ‘disgusting.’
Actress Camilla Luddington was among the first to comment, writing ‘DELETE YOUR ACCOUNT’, before questioning: ‘Who wrote this????’
Many said they felt like they had gone back in time after reading the piece, while others described it as ‘disgusting’
She screenshot a section of the article, which includes a quote from an ‘American heiress’ that reads: ‘American girls will give blowjobs way earlier than British girls because they don’t consider it sex.’
The quote continues: ‘But they also like that we have polished nails and brush our hair.’
Other readers also criticised the piece, with one writing: ‘Hi @TatlerUK, is this a joke? Was this written in the 1950’s? Are you aware it’s 2017?’
Referring to a comment in the article about British women not brushing their hair, one Twitter user joked she’d never met a man who could even tell if she’d had a hair cut
Others said they were shocked by the opinions given in the feature piece, which was originally published in 2015
Another commented: ‘This is disgusting. How was this even allowed to be published?’
One Twitter user added: ‘What a horribly trashy article #beyondparody’.
A spokeswoman for Tatler told the Evening Standard: ‘This is a piece that first appeared in the April 2015 issue of Tatler.
‘The word “foreigner” was not an editorial opinion, but a direct quote from a source, referring to a person not holding a UK passport.’

Others described the article as ‘hideous’ and ‘messed up’ after Camilla screengrabbed a section that discussed differences in how American and British women behave in the bedroom
