Tayla Brailey’s husband heartbreaking act outside court as she is accused of sexual abuse of student

The devastated husband of a female PE teacher accused of sexually abusing a male student sobbed as he waited outside his wife’s court case.

Tayla Lee Brailey, 30, appeared in Liverpool Local Court on Thursday, charged with sexually abusing a 17-year-old boy she taught at a high school in Sydney’s southwest.

Police will allege two of the offences , sexual touching and aggravated sexual assault, took place in West Wollongong, her home suburb, in early to mid July.

She also allegedly raped the minor on July 26 in the same suburb as the school.

As Brailey appeared in court via video link from Amber Laurel Correctional Centre, dressed in grey track pants and a hoodie, her parents sat side-by-side in court, an arm wrapped around each other’s waist.

Noticeably distraught but trying to remain composed, the couple were at times overcome by emotion, breaking down in tears when Magistrate Imad Abdul-Karim noted the alleged offences carried prison sentences.

Brailey and her father also let out a gasp when it was revealed during the prosecution’s attempt to impose a suppression order that the media had already widely reported the case.

Aside from occasional emotional outbursts, Brailey remained quiet throughout the hearing, resting her head on her hands and looking down at the floor.

At one point, while details about the allegations were being read to the court, she trembled in her seat.

Her husband, Isaiah, who she married just 11 months ago, remained in the lobby during the proceedings.

He and her parents maintained a united front, holding each other and crying during court breaks.

Police prosecutor Sgt Hillery told Magistrate Abdul-Karim said  there was a strong case against Brailey.

‘Spontaneous admissions were made by the defendant when spoken to by police,’ Sgt Hillery said.

‘The defendant, when spoken to, allowed access to her mobile phone and through that the prosecution and detectives obtained further material which assists the case.

‘She (allegedly) acknowledges her wrongdoing, that it is inappropriate and continued down that path, so far as informing the complainant not to speak to anyone about what was happening prior to the alleged incident occurring.”

Outside court, Brailey’s parents did not answer reporters’ questions as they left to collect their daughter from jail after Magistrate Abdul-Karim granted bail.

Magistrate Abdul-Karim ruled Brailey must stay at her parents’ house and only leave home if accompanied by one of her parents.

She must also surrender her passport, abide by a curfew, and not go near the school.

Similarly, Brailey’s husband did not comment when he separately left the court a short time later.

Brailey had been working for the NSW Department of Education since October, 2017, after completing a bachelor’s degree in physical and health education at the University of Wollongong.
