Taylor Swift gigs fail to lift the High Street gloom as bad weather sees shoppers flock online

Swift trade: Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour lifted shop sales in Edinburgh and Liverpool

Taylor Swift failed to lift the gloom on British high streets despite the excitement surrounding her Eras Tour.

Shopper numbers slipped 2.3 per cent in June compared to last year, according to BRC Sensormatic IQ data.

Edinburgh shops were 2.4 per cent busier, while Liverpool’s were up 1.1 per cent – thanks to the pop star performing there.

But in London, where Swift played three nights, levels were down 2.5 per cent as wet weather deterred shoppers.

And in Cardiff, which hosted one gig, the level fell 5.1 per cent.

It is understood many fans will have turned to online retailers to buy outfits for the shows.

Big names such as H&M have already said bad weather has hit sales. The figures come as retail leaders get ready to demand measures to boost high streets.
