Teacher accused of taping a mask to the face of a boy, 9, when he forgot to put one on

A teacher has been accused of taping a mask to the face of a nine-year-old boy when he forgot to put one on as he went to get a glass of water.

The boy’s mother, who spoke anonymously, said the incident involving a female substitute teacher happened in a fourth grade classroom at Reedom Elementary School in Mountain’s Edge, Las Vegas, FOX5 reported.

She called for the teacher’s resignation after the alleged incident where her son was publicly humiliated in front of the classroom as the teacher secured the mask to his face using tape while the rest of the class was laughing.

‘I don’t think this woman has any business teaching children’

‘I was furious, furious. I was scared for my son on what kind of long-term effect it is going to have on him socially, the fact that the entire class was laughing,’ the mother said.

The mother said it is not a political issue for her as she has no problem with the mask mandate in the Clark County School District but said ‘corporal punishment in schools’ should not be happening.

She has since filed a report with police.

‘He went to get a sip of water, forgot to put the mask on. The teacher did not tell him to put it back on or send him to the office, she instead pulled him up in front of the classroom in front of all of the students and she then taped the mask across the top of his face,’  the mother said.

She said the teacher then put more tape from the boy’s nose to his forehead.

An administrator noticed the tape on the child’s face when he went to their office to pick up homework his dad had dropped off for him.

They took the tape off his face and notified the principal, who went to the classroom and notified the parents of the child about what had happened.

The mother later asked her son if other students had also had their face masks taped to their face and he claimed that he remembered up to five similar incidents in the classroom and it had been happening since the start of the school year.

The Clark County School District released an statement saying they were conducting an investigation, but claimed it was an isolated incident.

‘The district is aware of the isolated incident and is dealing with the employee through the proper channels. The principal proactively notified the family of the investigation,’ CCSD said.

Users on Twitter voiced their outrage.

‘This is assault. Why is the teacher not arrested?,’ tweeted one user.

While other commented: ‘ Try it with my kid. Go ahead and make our day.’

According to a policy change announced in July this year, Clark County School District has required masks in schools, regardless of age or vaccination status.

‘Its crazy. Corporal punishment in schools should not be happening,’ the mother said.

She also said she might transfer her child to anew school.

School mask mandates have sparked a national debate on whether or not schools’ districts authority to order them, and the measures used by teachers to make students comply with them.

On July 30,  Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued an executive order banning Florida schools from  forcing children to wear masks, insisting there would not be any consequences as COVID cases jumped 50% in the state.

His order was overthrown by Florida Judge John Cooper, who ruled school districts could require students to wear masks, after parents brought a lawsuit against the Governor’s ban.

Last week, DeSantis threatened to block funding from two schools in the state over their mask mandates.

In others states like Oklahoma and Texas the battle between school officials and state governments has also ended in court, where judges have granted schools authorities authority to keep mask mandates.

But the disagreements have created disruption in the classrooms.

In California, two siblings were removed from their respective classroom by school resource officers after they refused to wear masks because of religion reasons, as the whole campus was placed on lockdown.

Victoria and Drew Nelson, of Temecula, were forced to leave school grounds on their first and last day of class at Springs Charter School on August.

Administrators said the students were asked to either comply to wear the mask or leave their classrooms.
