Teachers, parents and their pupils rejoiced this morning after they woke up to a thick blanket of snow, which forced schools across the country to close.

More than 300 schools were shut for safety reasons today with forecasters warning up to four inches could fall over parts of northern England, Scotland Northern Ireland this week. 

Some mothers and fathers had already pulled on their wellies and wrapped their youngsters in thick hats, gloves and scarves when they found out they would be staying at home. 

Met Office weather warnings for snow, ice and rain, stretch from Nottingham in the East Midlands, to Londonderry in the west and the Orkney Islands above Scotland today, with more hazardous conditions on their way for tomorrow.

The worst affected areas include Braford and County Durham, with 100 schools closed in each area, as well as North Yorkshire, Gateshead, Northumberland, Leeds and Fife.   

While some celebrated being able to work from home for the day, others bemoaned being unable to drive and warned motorists to stay safe on the road. 

Others busied themselves taking pictures of their back gardens carpeted in white and posting images of their adorable pets frolicking in the snow on social media.
