A senior at a Northern California high school was arrested Friday morning after a video surfaced showing him throwing a kitten into the water.
The shocking video led to Garret Haile, 18, being arrested after the clip showed him lobbing the small creature very far.
The video was taken over a year ago, however police say it surfaced this week and has been shared across social media hundreds of times, reported Oklahoma’s News 4.
‘My heart, it just left my body,’ said Nicole Pinheiro, who shared the video. ‘And, I showed my mom, and she burst into tears. She was like “I can’t believe that this is the world now.”‘
Investigators in Stanislaus County said the viral video helped them to locate the Patterson High School student.
Haile was arrested on Friday before school where he was booked into jail on a felony animal cruelty charge – he is expected to face the charge as a minor.
Authorities also said that whoever recorded the video may also face charges.
The video has shocked many people, including Pinheiro who said ‘At 17, I still knew what I was doing. He knew what he was doing.’
‘Even if he was just joking around or just trying to put something on Snapchat or whatever he was doing, it’s wrong regardless. Regardless of if it’s a year old or today, he still did it.’

In the video the person recording can be heard saying, ‘Welcome to badass, and this is Felipe the flying cat.’
Police are investigating the area where Haile threw the cat – it is currently unknown if the cat survived.
He has since been released from custody. It was unclear what was his bail amount was.
