Teen girl ‘gang raped in Cairns cane field by five men’

A teenage girl was allegedly gang raped by five men, including her boyfriend, in a cane field after they got her drunk.

The men were accused of plying the 16-year-old with alcohol at their house in Carins until she passed out, then driving her to the field on December 28.

They then allegedly repeatedly raped her in the boot of the car while she yelled ‘you’re all raping motherf**kers, get off me, raping motherf**kers’.

The Cairns Magistrates Court heard at one point she got away, picked up her underwear and ran towards the cane plants, but was caught and dragged back.

After allegedly continuing to rape her, the men drove her back to town and dumped her in the Cairns CBD.

‘If the allegations are substantiated they are shocking and they are traumatic,’ Magistrate Nerida Wilson said, according to the Cairns Post.

A 32-year-old labourer stood accused of being one of the five men charged, and applied for bail denying the rape happened.

His lawyer Nicholas Pagonis said the man admitted he was with the girl but said her version of events was affected by her being drunk.

Prosecutor Senior Constable Trevor Woodman argued the police case was ‘strong’ and there was a risk he would interfere with witnesses if released.

Magistrate Wilson said the case was ‘serious enough’ to refuse bail and the victim could also be in danger if the accused made bail.

‘While the Crown case is not at its highest, it’s definitely not at its lowest,’ she said.

Three of his co-accused faced court last week, only one of whom made bail under strict conditions, and the fifth man, 33, didn’t apply for bail on Wednesday.

They will all face court again on January 24.
