The victim – who it is believed had attended the Jalalabad Jamay Masjid mosque in nearby Sickle Street – was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A large police cordon remained in place today as police forensic teams combed the street for clues.

The close-knit community in the Glodwick area reacted with shock to the tragedy.

Laura Mongan, 21, who lives near the scene, said: ‘Everyone gets on with everyone round here, if you treat people with respect they treat you with respect.

‘It is a shock, you wouldn’t think anything like this would happen.’

Russell Stansfield, 42, said: ‘I will be more wary, it makes you think it could happen to anyone. I am in shock.’

It is thought a passer-by, who had first aid training, stopped to help the victim until an ambulance arrived.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, added: ‘You would see him playing football with his friends.

‘I kept asking people the same question, hoping to get a different answer but I kept getting told the same thing, that he had died.’

Greater Manchester Police continue to appeal for witnesses. Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Superintendent Nicky Porter, said: ‘Although the investigation is making good progress, it remains in its early stages.

‘I appeal to anyone who may have witnessed what happened yesterday or who has any information to contact us.

‘I am grateful for the support the local community and the hospitality they have shown to officers, some of them keeping them supplied with hot drinks during a very wet night.

‘My foremost thoughts are with the family who have suffered this tragedy and they continue to be support by specially-trained officers.’
