A teenage girl who allegedly stabbed her pet cat 20 times and threw him off a balcony was on an intensive corrections order at the time.

Celina Shead, 19, was arrested at her unit in Dee Why on Sydney’s northern beaches after a concerned neighbour called Triple-0.

Police found the body of the 11-year-old cat named Ginger on the footpath outside second floor of the block of flats about 8.20am on Wednesday.

Shead was led away in handcuffs and taken to Northern Beaches Hospital for a mental health assessment, and released to police custody.

She was denied bail at Manly Local Court on Thursday, charged with torture, beating an animal to death, and aggravated animal cruelty.

The court heard she was sentenced for 30 unrelated crimes just a week ago. Court records show she was given a 12-month intensive corrections order.

The teenager, who was wearing a t-shirt, track pants, and no shoes while handcuffed in court, will spend the night in lockup and appear again on Friday.

A second cat was rescued from the flat, where she lives with her father and sisters, by police and placed in the care of the RSPCA.

Her father, marketing guru Rowan Shead, told Daily Mail Australia his daughter had a history of mental health problems.

Neither he nor Shead’s sisters were home at the time of the alleged cat slaughter and Mr Shead was unaware she was charged until Thursday morning.

Shead attended Narrabean Sports High where she completed her Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award in 2014.
