Teenager car window washer killed by car in Auckland

A teenager car window washer who suffered critical injuries after being hit by a car has died in hospital.

Cayson-Lei Walters, 16, was jogging across a busy road in Greenlane, Auckland, when he was run down.

The young man died in hospital on Thursday, prompting police to warn of the dangers of washing cars at the intersection.

Mr Walters was mourned by friends, who described him as ‘a normal boy, like a church boy.’, and said ‘he was a crack-up half the time’.

Auckland City East Area Commander Steve Clark said the tragic death was evidence of the dangers of the illegal activity.

‘This is a very dangerous activity, which can have serious and sometimes fatal consequences, as pedestrians risk their safety by crossing in front and around of moving vehicles,’ he said, Yahoo Seven reported.

‘Since September, window washing is a traffic offence and those found to be unlawfully washing or offering to wash a vehicle on the road, which was not legally parked, could be liable to a $150 fine.’

Police said Mr Walters was looking in the opposite direction while crossing Great South Road when he was hit.

They urged people who see car window washers in the area to contact police.

Despite the fatality, young people were seen washing windscreens in the same spot earlier this week.

‘Can’t get into a course, can’t get a job until we’re 16… That’s why we’re out here doing lights,’ said one of the window washers.
