A group of teenagers appear to have spotted several sharks swimming in shallow waters at a popular beach on the Gold Coast.

Romy Jarvinen, 14, was swimming with her friends at Mooloolaba beach on Tuesday afternoon when they spotted what appeared to be a shark fin in the water.

The shark was just metres from Romy, who was sitting on a rock in the shallows.

Her friend yelled out in surprise and alerted the 14-year-old, who has a ‘fascinating respect for sharks’.

Romy’s mum, Sarah, told Daily Mail Australia the girls were sure the fins belonged to sharks and captured several photos of the animals.

‘Thoughts on the coast are divided as to whether they were sharks or rays,’ Ms Jarvinen said.

She said they were ‘beautiful either way’ and the girls were adamant the animals were sharks.

‘Romy did lose the anklet during the photograph but decided against retrieving it.’

The friends had been swimming on the rocks just north of surf lifesaver flags, in front of an old caravan park.

Ms Jarvinen said despite the family living in the area for 18 years, this was the first time they had seen a shark.

Romy, who is a shark lover, found the whole encounter ‘totally exhilarating’.
