Tennessee Department of Correction spokesperson Dorinda Carter confirmed that 58-year-old Nicholas Sutton wanted to die in the electric chair

A Tennessee death row inmate has notified prison officials that he wants to die by electric chair during his scheduled execution on February 20.

Nicholas Todd Sutton, 58, is hoping to utilize a state law that would allow condemned inmates sentenced to death before 1999 the chance to choose between lethal injection or the electric chair.

Tennessee Department of Correction spokesperson Dorinda Carter confirmed Sutton’s choice on Wednesday, the Tennessean reports.

He would be the fifth inmate executed by electrocution since 2018.

The inmate joins others who claim that lethal injection drugs amount to state-sanctioned torture and create a sensation similar to drowning or being burned alive.

Sutton hopes to utilize a state law that would allow condemned inmates sentenced to death before 1999 the chance to choose between lethal injection or the electric chair.

Sutton was sentenced to death for his involvement in the stabbing and killing of fellow inmate Carl Estep.

A convicted child rapist from Knoxville, Estep was stabbed more than three dozen times on January 15, 1985, in a cell at the Morgan County Regional Correctional Facility.

Sutton had been previously convicted for killing four people, including his grandmother Dorothy Sutton, when he was 18.

The man was also responsible for killing his high school John Large and Charles Almon.

WBIR reports that Sutton is seeking clemency from Governor Bill Lee since he has allegedly saved other inmates from behind bars.
