  • The preliminary plans for the development have been approved by Nashville
  • Any finer details would need to be approved by the Metro Council in the future
  • A domed roof allows them to host the Super Bowl, the Final Four & other events
  • At $2.2bn, this is projected to be the second most expensive stadium in history

The next steps in the Tennessee Titans plans for a new stadium took a next step forward when the Nashville Metro Council approved its building plans.

A term sheet has been approved by the council on what is a proposed domed $2.2bn stadium located next to Nissan Stadium – where the Titans currently play.

Council members voted 27-8-3 in favor of agreeing to the terms, but finer details still need to be approved and finalized with a goal of opening by 2026.

The Nashville Metro Council has approved plans to develop a new stadium for the Titans

The plans say the facility will cover 1.7million square feet with a capacity of about 60,000.

While the weather in central Tennessee is not notable for being cold, the dome will allow them to host events such as the Super Bowl, the Final Four, College Football Playoff matches and other major sporting events.

Development on Nissan Stadium began in 1997 and opened in 1999 – having hosted the Titans, Nashville SC, and the football team for Tennessee State University.

The lease for the stadium will be half funded by the Titans, the NFL, and personal seat licenses.

The rest of the funding will come from a tax on hotels paid by tourists, sales tax from in the stadium on both NFL and the stadium campus, and the rest coming from the state.

At $2.2billion, this is projected to be the second most expensive stadium development in history – behind the $5.5bn spent to build SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
