Alexander Bublik was up to his old tricks as he pulled off a jaw-dropping shot to leave fans stunned at the Canadian Open – leaving some calling for a rule change.

The tennis star was fighting to come back from a match point against Ben Shelton when he resorted to the seemingly impossible.

Struggling to reach a gorgeous drop shot by his American opponent, Bublik threw his racket in a desperate bid to catch the ball.

Amazingly, it glided underneath the ball and bounced it back over the net, prompting gasps and cheers from around the Stade IGA in Montreal.

However, the point did not count as the racket left his hand and subsequently slid into the net, costing him the match as he lost 7-6, 6-2 in the last 64 of the competition.

Bublik and Shelton laughed as they embraced at the net, almost unable to process the remarkable shot they had just witnessed.

As the crowd cheered, Shelton bowed and gestured for them to celebrate Bublik after creating a memorable moment. It is unclear if it was intentional or not.

‘This should count as a legal shot,’ wrote one admirer on X, formerly Twitter.

‘Never been a big tennis guy, love that you are and the work you’re doing with it, but this may be one of the most amazing sport feats I’ve seen across the board,’ said another.

‘You’re guaranteed entertainment with Bublik,’ said another.

‘I don’t think I ever saw something like that,’ one wrote.

Bublik, the world number 25, is known for his ability to pull off the extraordinary.

At the 2022 Miami Open, the Kazakhstani star turned his racket upside-down and hit the ball with the handle.

That point did count but unfortunately he still lost to Casper Ruud.
