Terrified British tourists ran for their lives after two gunmen opened fire in a holiday resort near Marbella.

Holidaymakers and locals were reportedly forced to lock themselves in cafes and bars after gun shots were heard in the resort town of Estepona.

Footage from the scene showed dozens of stunned people crowded in outside seating areas of cafes after the apparent shootout.

Tables and chairs were seen strewn across the floor in one clip posted to social media, the Sun reported.

Four nearby police cars were still flashing blue lights as they blocked the road on the Costa Del Sol.

Witnesses reported how a panic-stricken stampede of people charged down Calle Real after nine gun shots were allegedly heard.

One British expat was locked inside the Rincon Toscano restaurant for around 20 minutes.

She told the Olive Press: ‘People were in a panic and started running into restaurants. 

‘We had no idea what was happening, we’ve all got memories of what happened in Paris and Barcelona, we thought it might have been a terrorist attack.’

Police are said to have chased down and arrested two armed suspects after the incident began outside a restaurant.

No casualties have been reported and the scene remained cordoned off this evening.
