Terrifying moment Sherrard Falls in NSW turns into raging torrent threatening to sweep away cars

When there isn’t flash flooding, severe thunderstorms or gale force winds, going past Sherrard Falls on the NSW mid-north coast is a lovely drive. 

But shocking new footage has revealed that when the weather turns very bad, the Falls become a raging torrent of brown water that only the brave or foolhardy drive through. 

Among those brave enough to cross the path of the gushing waterfall on Thursday was the one car that filmed this spectacular sight. 

Sherrard Falls, which is a cascade waterfall – meaning the water descends a series of rock steps – is located between the town of Dorrigo and and the locality of Thora in the Dorrigo National Park.  

The bridge across Sherrard Falls is just one lane and is subject to closure in times of high rain, due to flooding over the road. 

But the drivers in this video got through before the road was closed.  

Australia’s east coast is bracing for a very wet weekend as a fierce weather system sweeps across the country and dumps rain in already swollen rivers.

The low pressure system is forecast to cross into South Australia on Saturday before intensifying over NSW on Sunday – bringing with it the risk of flash flooding and heavy rainfall.

Merimbula on the NSW far south coast could get as much as 100mm of rain on Sunday as the warm weather gives way to heavy downpours.

Sydneysiders can expect a drenching of as much as 35mm of rain on Sunday.

However, the Bureau of Meteorology has downgraded an earlier forecast of severe in NSW and the ACT.

‘The immediate threat of severe thunderstorms has passed, but the situation will continue to be monitored and further warnings will be issued if necessary,’ it said. 

‘In the Lower Western and western parts of the Riverina there is still potential for gusty showers/thunderstorms happening during the evening.’

In Victoria, Melburnians endured their coldest four-day stretch in 167 years with temperatures stubbornly remaining below 15.5C from Friday to Monday.

On top of the record-breaking string of frosty days in Victoria, the cold snap also saw snow fall across Mount Hotham. 

The NSW State Emergency Service advises that people should keep clear of fallen power lines, creeks and storm drains.

It also said not to walk, ride a bike or drive through flood water.
