This is the nail-biting moment two surfers collide as they ride the same monster wave.

The footage filmed in Nazaré in Portugal during a big swell shows surfers Nick von Rupp and João Guedes crash into each other as they try to make the most of the huge wave.

The clip begins showing João on the red board surfing the wave as Nick who is riding the yellow board comes into view.

Suddenly João veers quite severely to his left as the power of the waves takes him on a specific course.

He then ends up just behind Nick who took a more direct top to bottom track through the wave. 

João then clips the back of Nick’s board which completely throws him off balance and causes him to crash into the water.

Nick, however, manages to keep riding the rest of the giant wave.  

Luckily neither of the athletes were injured at all because of the scary incident. 

Sharing footage on social media Nick wrote: ‘S*** happens, it’s the way you deal with it that matters!

‘Dropping down this wave feeling @joaoguedessurfs board on my heels was one of the scariest moments out at Nazaré. 

‘No bad vibes here, Joao and myself are friends and glad we both are Ok after this.’

Surfing has now been banned at Nazaré after the swell attracted thousands of spectators in the middle of the pandemic last week.

The decision was announced on Wednesday by Portugal’s National Health Commission after there were around 20,000 people gathered on beaches last week.

The big swell was generated earlier in the week by Hurricane Epsilon in the North Atlantic before it reached the west coast of Portugal. 

Portugal has seen 166,900 cases of coronavirus and has reported 2,792 deaths.
