Tesco pulls Finest cake after nuts accidentally added

Tesco have recalled a chocolate cake because walnuts were added in error, posing a risk to unwitting buyers with nut allergies.

The £2.75 Tesco Finest Chocolate Cake was pulled from the supermarket giant’s shelves as allergic customers were warned not to eat the dessert. 

Boxes serving six and with best before dates of January 17 were removed because of the undeclared allergen when carrot cake was placed in packaging by mistake.

A spokesperson for Tesco said: ‘We have been made aware by our supplier that due to a manufacturing error that a small number of boxes from one date code have been incorrectly packed with carrot cake.

‘The carrot cake contains walnuts and as such will have the incorrect allergen information on the packaging.

‘Please return the affected product to store where a full refund will be given. No receipt is required.

‘Tesco apologises to our customers for any inconvenience caused.’

The Food Standards Agency warned nut allergy sufferers who have bought the cake not to eat it.

‘Tesco is recalling one date code of Tesco’s finest chocolate cake because it may contain walnuts which are not mentioned on the label,’ it said.

‘This means the product poses a health risk for anyone with an allergy to nuts (walnuts).

‘If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to nuts, do not eat it.

‘Instead return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.

‘No other Tesco products are known to be affected.

‘Tesco is recalling the above product from customers and has contacted the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall.

‘The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers.’
