Tesla has confirmed it has reached a major sales milestone in the UK as Britons continue to snap up the brand’s electric vehicles.

Having only entered the market in 2014 with its Model S saloon, the EV maker has this month hit a massive registrations landmark.

For Britons have now bought over a quarter of a million Teslas.

The US brand – steered by the flamboyant and equally divisive Elon Musk – says it has surpassed 250,000 UK sales, which ‘highlights its ongoing contribution to the country’s transition to sustainable energy and EV adoption’.

The car maker says it eclipsed 200,000 deliveries in Britain less than a year ago.

In 2024, it sold 50,334 EVs in the UK and in the first two months of this year has shifted another 7,628 units.

‘With over a decade of experience in the UK market, Tesla remains at the forefront of the automotive industry, continuously enhancing vehicle performance, efficiency, and safety through software updates and new features,’ the brand said.

The US giant is also claimed that its Model Y SUV retained its crown as the world’s best-selling car last year – though this hasn’t been officially declared in a global sales count.

A new version has recently been launched with upgraded styling, similar to that of the marmite Cybertruck.

It also boasts improved aerodynamics and more range than before.

Model Y – and the smaller Model 3 – were among the three best-selling new cars in Britain last month, despite a decline in deliveries across other markets, which has widely been linked to public reaction to Musk’s controversial political stance and blossoming relationship with President Trump.

February sales in Germany slipped by 76 per cent while they were down more than 50 per cent in Italy and Portugal and 45 per cent in France in the same month.

Tesla makes 51 per cent of its cars in China. Sales of these vehicles slumped by 49 per cent in February.

At the same time, Chinese group BYD increased its sales by 161 per cent during the month. BYD (standing for Build Your Dream) has already toppled Tesla from its position as the world’s number one in EVs.
