Texans star Tank Dell breaks his silence on Florida nightclub shooting – over a month on from being wounded in the crossfire

Houston Texans player Tank Dell has broken his silence about the Florida nightclub shooting that left him wounded in April.

The wide receiver, who returned to practise less than a month after he was injured in the crossfire, said it was a case of ‘wrong place, wrong time.’

‘First off, I’m blessed, you know,’ Dell said on Monday’s episode of the ‘Million Dollaz Worth of Game’ podcast.

The Florida native went on, ‘I went back to see my mom, I wasn’t even planning to go to the little pool party or whatever, but my boys saw that I was home, so they hit me up and was like “pull up to the party.”

‘They told me there was going to be security, people getting checked at the door, stuff like that. So, I’m like, ‘All right, cool.’ It’s a good vibe, and there was a lot of people that I know in there, so it was cool. And then that s**t just popped off out of nowhere. It just went south out of nowhere.’

A 16-year-old suspect has since been charged with attempted homicide, firing a weapon in a public place, using a firearm during a felony and illegal possession of a firearm by a minor, following the incident on April 28 that wounded 10 people.

Elsewhere in the interview, Dell recalled, ‘I thought I removed myself from the situation. When you see on the video, when I ran across I thought I removed myself from the little situation of the altercation when they was fighting, but I put myself in the middle of two people, and it just went crazy.’

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, per ESPN, Dell said he has completely recovered from the ‘scary’ incident and was a full participant in Houston´s minicamp.

‘It definitely changed my perspective of things,’ he said. ‘Just being around the right group of guys and stuff like that or being in the right situations.’

‘Not only for myself, but for my family because I don’t want to put myself in that type of position. And especially like my family, like I got a little brother, my mom, I know how they were feeling at that time. And it’s just a blessing that I’m safe, but it’s just a traumatic experience overall,’ he said.

His teammate, C.J. Stroud, who joined him on the podcast, recalled learning that his friend had been shot.

‘All I read was “Tank got shot” and I just dropped my phone, I start tearing up man. You know, when you hear that, you start thinking the worse,’ he said.

‘[It] was a good moment for me to realize that I can’t go home and do the same things that I was doing, too.’
