A new trainline project which has been on hold since 2020 could be set to be revived.

Crossrail 2 was designed to be a hybrid commuter rail and rapid transit route connecting Surrey and Hertfordshire in the south with Broxbourne and Southgate in the north.

However, development of the line was paused in October 2020 as part of the Transport for London Funding Agreement.

In a statement released by Crossrail 2, the project leaders stated that the ‘work undertaken so far was fully documented’ so it could be ‘restarted when the time was right’.

And a new development plan for the British Library has revealed that the project is still being considered.

Plans for a huge £1.1bn extension of The British Library expected to be completed by 2032 include an underground space for a potential future Crossrail 2 station.

The library’s proposed extension is located above the planned Euston/St Pancras Crossrail 2 station.

The space will likely remain empty in case the paused Crossrail 2 project is revived.

A statement on the Crossrail 2 website reads: ‘Transport for London continues to manage the Crossrail 2 Safeguarding Directions on behalf of the Secretary of State for Transport and continues to work with stakeholders whose developments are affected by the Safeguarding.

‘This is to ensure we can continue to protect the route until such time as the railway can be progressed.’

The British Library has said its plans will ‘create a groundbreaking new hub’ which will ‘welcome future generations of visitors, learners, researchers and budding entrepreneurs’.

Its proposed plans include extra cycle docking, above ground paths, a community garden and new business spaces.
