The AA has announced the winners of its 2019 British B&B awards – and there can be no dispute over the loveliness of the gong-baiting lodges.
Awards have been handed out in a number of categories, including friendliest, story of the year, unique, restaurant with rooms, breakfast of the year and guest accommodation of the year.
The winners include a restored Edwardian country house with views of a rather famous English lake, a Victorian property with four-poster beds and a restored lodge at the head of a sea loch. Scroll down to behold the properties that bowled the AA inspectors over the most.

This is the best B&B in England for 2019, according to the AA, which was impressed with the luxuriousness of the accommodation and its location – overlooking Lake Windermere.
The AA inspector who visited said: ‘This elegant, stylishly restored Edwardian country house is owned and managed by the Kennedy family, who combine a warm, friendly welcome with five-star service. The 14 individually-designed bedrooms have crisp Egyptian cotton bed linen, deluxe fluffy towels, robes, slippers, complimentary sherry, DAB radios, WiFi, TVs, tea trays and Nespresso coffee machines.’
What’s more, ‘many rooms have superb lake views’.

AA GUEST ACCOMMODATION OF THE YEAR, SCOTLAND WINNER: Tigh Na Leigh Guest House, Alyth, Perthshire
Fifty-one members of the public have reviewed Tigh Na Leigh Guest House, pictured, on the AA website and its average score is 10 out of 10
Tigh Na Leigh Guest House features a blend of Victorian architecture with contemporary interior design
The AA inspector dispatched to inspect Tigh Na Leigh said the meals served are ‘delicious’
Fifty-one members of the public have reviewed Tigh Na Leigh Guest House on the AA website and its average score is 10 out of 10.
The inspector the AA dispatched to review it wouldn’t, apparently, disagree with the score and waxed lyrical about the property’s blend of Victorian architecture with contemporary interior design and its ‘spectacular landscaped garden’.
The meals served are, the inspector said, ‘delicious’.
AA UNIQUE B&B OF THE YEAR: Brightham House, Salcombe, Devon
Brightham House has style and character in abundance, according to the AA
The bedrooms at Brightham House all have a unique personality, the AA’s inspector said
‘This gracious Victorian abode,’ said the AA, ‘has been totally refurbished and re-styled to provide impressive levels of comfort and quality.’
Brightham House also does a nice line in originality – hence the award.
The AA inspector continued: ‘There is style and character in abundance here with bedrooms all having a unique personality and equipped with all the necessities for a relaxing stay. Public areas will put a smile on the face with fascinating vintage and retro pieces, all skilfully assembled to create a very inviting environment.’
AA RESTAURANT WITH ROOMS OF THE YEAR: The Lodge on Loch Goil, Lochgoilhead, Argyll and Bute
The Lodge on Loch Goil offers award-winning cuisine and seven luxury bedrooms
To win this award a restaurant needs to excel with fodder and provide top-notch accommodation.
The Lodge on Loch Goil, which sits right on the water’s edge, does just that.
The AA said that it has ‘imaginative, award-winning cuisine served at dinner plus superb breakfasts’ and seven ‘luxury’ rooms.
BREAKFAST OF THE YEAR, ENGLAND: The Old House at Gotten Manor, Ventnor, Isle of Wight
The Old House at Gotten Manor has scooped the award for the best breakfast in England
According to the AA, the best B&B breakfast in England is served at The Old House at Gotten Manor on the Isle of Wight.
The AA said that the breakfasts are ‘comprehensive’ and feature ‘the finest ingredients’.
What’s more, they’re served in a ‘cosy dining room’. The AA concluded that it’s a property that’s ‘full of rustic charm’.
BREAKFAST OF THE YEAR, SCOTLAND: Craigmhor Lodge & Courtyard, Pitlochry, Perth & Kinross
Craigmhor Lodge & Courtyard apparently rustles up the best breakfasts in Scotland, according to the AA
Strangely, the AA website makes no mention of the breakfasts at Craigmhor Lodge & Courtyard, the winner of the best breakfast in Scotland category.
But the organisation was clearly impressed with the fodder.
It certainly looks tempting on the picture above.
BREAKFAST OF THE YEAR, WALES: Ramsey House, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire
Ramsey House makes the best B&B breakfasts in Wales, according to the AA. Pictured is one of the menu items
From the description on the AA website, you’d never know that the breakfasts are award-winning at Ramsey House.
It merely says: ‘Breakfast provides a choice of home-made items, including breads and preserves.’
Clearly the inspector was holding back on the intel…
