The Aussie actress who turned her back on Hollywood

She became a Hollywood favourite after starring as the titular character in Tim Burton’s highly successful adaptation of Alice in Wonderland in 2010.

But on Wednesday, Mia Wasikowska looked worlds away from her red carpet heyday as she was spotted during a rare outing in Sydney’s Bronte Beach.

Wearing a cool blue turtleneck, paired with a contrasting vibrant sling bag, Mia appeared deep in thought after lunching with a female friend.

Her ensemble was completed with a practical black strap bag and casual trousers.

Mia’s return to Sydney has sparked rumours about potential new projects in Australia after turning her back on Hollywood in recent years.

I think I’ve got less patience for the parts of the industry that I don’t like. I don’t care too much to be pushed into an image that will get me jobs,’ the All Saints star explained, referring to Hollywood as ‘repressive’.

This isn’t the first time Mia has spoken about life as an A-lister, telling The Guardian in 2019 that the spotlight wasn’t always as rosy as it seemed.

When asked what advice she would give to young actors, Mia said: ‘If you really, really love it – keep going but my perspective has changed.’

She continued: ‘I’ve done this job for ten years now all over the world and after a while, it leaves you feeling hollow.’

The Jane Eyre star went on to say that while she believes acting is an ‘awesome’ job she admitted: ‘The perception is different from the reality – it is really lonely.’

A self-confessed ‘introvert’, the blonde was trained as a ballet dancer in her teens before she opted to try her hand at acting.

By 2010 – three years after making her debut – the blonde was the highest-grossing actress in the world after her starring role in Disney’s Alice in Wonderland live-action reboot.

In the film, she played the leading role of Alice, starring alongside Hollywood heavyweights Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.

Her latest role, Club Zero, sees Mia play a teacher who takes a job at an elite school and forms a strong bond with five students – a relationship that eventually takes a dangerous turn.
