REVEALED: The Australian state emerging as a red hot contender to host the 2032 Olympic Games
- Queensland is a major contender in the race to host the 2032 Olympic games
- New rules have been drafted by officials to allow earlier bids to host the games
- A poll suggested 60 per cent of the nation might travel to the state for the event
- If Australian leaders support the plan, an official bid to host will be made in 2020
Queensland could be a major contender in the race to host the 2032 Olympic games, with the announcement expected to happen as early as next year.
Australian Olympic Committee president John Coates is expected to tell politicians and tourism leaders today that southeast Queensland is likely to win the bid to host the world’s largest sporting event if they choose to, reported Sunrise.
The announcement comes after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) proposed new rules that would allow Australia to bid to host the 2032 Games.

‘The election by the IOC for the host of 2032 would normally be taken seven years out, in 2025,’ said Mr Coates told The Courier-Mail.
‘But if the proposed changes are approved in 12 days’ time – and there is a candidate ready to put their hand up – the decision could be as early as before the opening of the Tokyo Games on July 24.’
The decision to put Queensland forward as a contender comes after a poll revealed 60 per cent of the nation would travel to the Sunshine State to watch the games, while 70 per cent believe the event would be good for the tourism industry.
Mr Coates also said that having 11 years to prepare for the games would be a major benefit, and the amount of publicity and tourism generated in the lead-up to the event would mean the games could pay for itself.

The northern state’s warm climate means the region is a prime location for athletes to train and prepare for events
But he also said the bid could only go ahead if local, state, and federal governments supported the plan by investing in the required infrastructure to cater to a large influx of people.
‘It is clear that without those investments, the proposal does not stand up. Conversely, it is clear that with those infrastructure investments an Olympic and Paralympic Games in southeast Queensland is feasible.’
Other countries that originally bid for the 2028 Games include the Netherlands, Russia, Malaysia and Singapore. While none have said they’ll bid for the 2032 Games at this stage, it’s expected some will bid for the later date.
Additional contenders for the 2032 Games include Jakarta in Indonesia, Mumbai in India, and a joint Pyongyang-Seoul proposal in North and South Korea, reported Inside The Games.

But southeast Queensland has gained a reputation as a prime sports location since hosting the Commonwealth Games last year, hosting triathlon and skydiving wold championships, and becoming the filming location for the blockbuster Aquaman.

More than 2500 athletes from 45 countries prepared for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games in Queensland – more than the host state of New South Wales – which was reported to have contributed around $413 million to the state economy.
