A new study has revealed the UK’s most walkable city and it’s good news for Brits who like a day out at the seaside.

Time Out asked over 18,000 people around the world to rate how easy their city is to get around on foot.

And while Abu Dhabi takes the crown as the world’s most walkable city, four British cities make it in to the global top 20.

According to the results, Brighton is officially the UK’s easiest city to explore without a car and the third most walkable in the world.

Just under nine in 10 (88 per cent) of residents rated Brighton’s walkability as ‘good’ or ‘amazing’.

Tourists will find that many of the city’s top-rated attractions are just a short walk from each other.

The Royal Pavilion is Brighton’s best-rated landmark on Tripadvisor. The historic palace, which has been described as Britain’s own version of the Taj Mahal,  was built as a seaside residence for King George IV.

A tourist wrote on Tripadvisor: ‘This place is absolutely amazing and it was not what I expected at all, which is a good thing by the way!

‘The outside of the pavilion and the gardens are beautiful as is but when we went inside the building, we were blown away by the decor.’

It’s just a short walk from another of Brighton’s highlights, The Lanes, a set of historic alleyways packed with vintage boutiques and shops.

And after wandering the shops, tourists can reach the city’s famous pebble beach in under 10 minutes.

A reviewer wrote on Tripadvisor: ‘The beach is stony but it’s still gorgeous. Nice for a walk and stopping at one of the beachfront bars.’

Another person wrote: ‘There is so much to do and see and eat on this beach! It’s great for all sorts of activities, shopping, meandering and drinking.’

Edinburgh, Cardiff and London are also rated among the world’s most walkable cities.

More than 80 per cent of Cardiff and Edinburgh’s residents feel that their cities were walkable while 79 per cent of Londoners consider the Big Smoke easy to explore on foot.

Outside the UK, Boston, New York, Bilbao, Chicago, Marrakech and San Francisco were among the best-rated cities for walkability.

In another recent walkability study, Cordoba, a gorgeous city in southern Spain was named the world’s most walkable city.

Skyscanner found it would take tourists just 26 minutes to walk between Cordoba’s main attractions.

It said: ‘The historic Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and ideal for exploring winding streets on foot.’

Meanwhile a new wooden city in Sweden has been designed to be a ‘five-minute city’ with all its amenities just a short walk from each other.
