The ‘creme de la creme of hotels’ named in the 2021 Tatler Travel Awards, from Cornwall’s ‘magical’ Pig at Harlyn Bay to a private island retreat in the Maldives

If you fancy staying in a luxury hotel but are feeling a bit bewildered by the choices, then heed the advice of the people who know a thing or two about posh – the staff at Tatler.

The high-society glossy has dished out its annual travel awards, which celebrate the ‘creme de la creme of hotels’.

According to the magazine, the 2021 winners range from ‘tranquil havens hidden high in the mountains to historic icons, each with their own unique story and sublime service’.

They include the ‘magical’ Pig at Harlyn Bay in Cornwall, the ‘spectacular’ Hotel Excelsior in Venice and the cultural haven that is the Belmond Grand Hotel in Sicily.

The ‘glamorous’ Villa Stéphanie in Germany is singled out as best spa hotel while The Nautilus Maldives is the best private island retreat.

BEST HOTEL WITH HEART – THE PIG AT HARLYN BAY, CORNWALL: The Pig hotel ‘restaurants with rooms’ concept has ‘completely changed the face of the British hotel scene’, according to Tatler. It describes the restaurant here as ‘sensational’ as ‘the chef does miraculous things with vegetables from the garden’ and adds that the hotel’s interiors are ‘dreamy’

BEST REMOTE RETREAT - THE HAPPY HOUSE, NEPAL: Located in rural eastern Nepal, Tatler says the Happy House is an 'incredible base from which to explore the wild Solu Khumbu region'. The magazine explains that the property has 'huge leather sofas to sink into' and 'a dramatic Mandala-muralled salon'

The magazine says it serves 'oxtail stew, the world’s best roast jerk chicken and steamed callaloo', which is 'eaten at a table beautifully set under the giant guango tree'

BEST HOTEL RESTAURANT – PANTREPANT, JAMAICA: ‘Beguiling, locally sourced food, cooked by the lovely Mama J’ is what is on offer at this restaurant, according to Tatler. The eatery is within a private retreat and a working farm.
