The best hotels named in the 2021 Tatler Travel Awards, from Cornwall to the Maldives 

BEST HOTEL WITH HEART – THE PIG AT HARLYN BAY, CORNWALL: The Pig hotel ‘restaurants with rooms’ concept has ‘completely changed the face of the British hotel scene’, according to Tatler. It describes the restaurant here as ‘sensational’ as ‘the chef does miraculous things with vegetables from the garden’ and adds that the hotel’s interiors are ‘dreamy’

BEST REMOTE RETREAT – THE HAPPY HOUSE, NEPAL: Located in rural eastern Nepal, Tatler says the Happy House is an ‘incredible base from which to explore the wild Solu Khumbu region’. The magazine explains that the property has ‘huge leather sofas to sink into’ and ‘a dramatic Mandala-muralled salon’

BEST HOTEL FOR FAMILIES – BELDI COUNTRY CLUB, MOROCCO: This hotel is the ‘promised land’ for families, says Tatler, thanks to its ‘impeccable decor and peaceful mood’. Days can be spent ‘lounging by the picturesque pools’ and ‘making clay pots in the pottery yard’. It concludes: ‘[It’s] part Alice in Wonderland, part bohemian fantasy, like living in a painting’

BEST HOTEL RESTAURANT – PANTREPANT, JAMAICA: ‘Beguiling, locally sourced food, cooked by the lovely Mama J’ is what is on offer at this restaurant, according to Tatler. The eatery is within a private retreat and a working farm. The magazine says it serves ‘oxtail stew, the world’s best roast jerk chicken and steamed callaloo’, which is ‘eaten at a table beautifully set under the giant guango tree’

BEST CULTURAL HAVEN – BELMOND GRAND HOTEL TIMEO, SICILY: ‘Pergolas laden with wisteria, gardens of roses and orange blossom, ravishing suites with operatic balconies and the best terrace on the island’, reads Tatler’s judgement on this hotel. DH Lawrence wrote Lady Chatterley’s Lover here and Truman Capote lived at the hotel for two years

BEST HOTEL SPA – VILLA STÉPHANIE, GERMANY: Set on the edge of the Black Forest in Baden Baden, Villa Stéphanie is the ‘most glamorous grande dame of spas’. Tatler adds: ‘But despite the warm, heavenly scented embrace, make no mistake, this is a hi-tech medispa with 15 digital detox suites, providing every service exacting guests could ask for.’ Pictured is one of the villa’s plunge pools 

BEST GRANDE DAME – MANDARIN ORIENTAL BANGKOK: The Mandarin Oriental Bangkok reopened last year after an eight-month overhaul which, according to Tatler, ‘added a superlative sparkle to the already lavish lobby, alongside clairvoyant technology in the suites’. The magazine notes: ‘Service is sublime throughout, including the most admirable concierge, who can even retrieve a lost credit card from an ATM machine.’ Pictured is the hotel lobby

BEST PRIVATE ISLAND RETREAT – THE NAUTILUS, MALDIVES: According to Tatler, this luxury resort takes the personalised experience ‘a step further’. The mantra is ‘anything, anytime, anywhere’, from ‘chefs preparing off-menu dishes at a moment’s notice (ask for the lobster curry) to reflexology at midnight’. The magazine adds: ‘No people: tick. Cashmere-soft sand: tick. Crystalline water: tick. Clairvoyant service: tick’

BEST BEACH HOTEL – HOTEL EXCELSIOR VENICE: This beachfront hotel ‘has been a magnet for the celestial set since it hosted the first Venice Film Festival in 1932’, says Tatler. The magazine explains: ‘Everyone from Claudia Cardinale to the Clooneys comes ashore for old-world glamour, restorative peace and quiet elegance. It’s immaculately run and much loved and nurtured by its new owners, Iconic Luxury Hotels, which makes all the difference’
