The Block 2022: Fans spot the real reason two homes didn’t sell

The Block viewers have a theory for why two of the homes from this year’s season failed to sell at auction earlier this month.

A fan of the Channel Nine renovation series drove past the completed houses in Gisborne recently and posted a photo of the view on Reddit.

They pointed out how close the houses were to one another, noting the lack of privacy that was not apparent on the show.

‘I posted the photos to give a glimpse into the layout of The Block houses this year as I could not get my head around it,’ the Reddit user wrote.

‘Going past you could really see the factors beyond the contestants’ control that made selling all these houses really difficult.’

Privacy is something you would expect to be included when you’re paying $4million for a country retreat, but several of the Block houses lacked this feature.

For some properties, there was also the issue of the other houses obstructing the view of the surrounding countryside.

‘It will take a lot of trees and about 10 years before these places hide the shed and get their privacy,’ one fan commented on the Reddit post.

Another said: ‘Yeah, they’ll look better with some massive hedges and/or trees in front of them. It’s just a shame that they used a design which needs to be hidden instead of being proudly displayed.’

Someone labelled the new gravel road the homes sat on as ‘Desolation Row’ while another said it was ‘no wonder no one wanted to buy them’.

Meanwhile, others slammed the ‘jarring’ mix of modern extensions with heritage homes before criticising their external presentation.

‘They all still look like construction sites and they went to auction looking like that,’ someone said, while another commented: ‘They look ridiculous, strapping a modern black cube to the side of a heritage home is just weird.’

‘God, the old and new is jarring. No architectural linkages at all. How they are $4m plus is crazy,’ one viewer wrote.

Someone else said: ‘From a distance those “modern” additions look like cat puke in that terrain and next to the vintage homes.

‘I really wish the producers had taken a little extra time and money to design something more harmonious. Probably would’ve paid off in the end.’

Adrian Portelli, who was a bidder on Omar and Oz’s winning house and later bought Sharon and Ankur’s House 3 in a private sale, told New Idea the boys’ property had the best view – which perhaps explains why it sold for the biggest price.

‘The view from [Oz and Omar’s] place had the best view… you got the swimming pool overlooking that view,’ he said.

Jenny and Dylan’s home was passed in, as was Sharon and Ankur’s, although the latter couple was able to secure a private sale less than a week after the auction.

As of Wednesday morning, Jenny and Dylan are yet to find a buyer.

The homes on The Block went under the hammer with a reserve of $4.08million.

Sharon and Ankur's home failed to find a buyer at auction, but was later sold to businessman Adrian Portelli for $4.25million
