The Block 2024: Winners become instant millionaires as Adrian Portelli breaks his own record during nail-biting finale

The Block’s 2024 winners were finally crowned on Sunday as the winning bid was revealed at the long-awaited auction.

Maddy, 24, and Charlotte, 22, impressively secured the highest bid of the day at $3.5 million on the Channel Nine renovation competition, despite being latecomers to the 2024 series.

Maddy and Charlotte, achieved the highest price with a single knock-out bid from Adrian ‘Mr Lambo’ Portelli.

With their reserve set at $1.95 million, Maddy and Charlotte walk away with an incredible $1.55 million profit, plus the $100,000 grand prize.

‘We are just so grateful, and it’s a very surreal feeling,’ said Maddy of their win.

‘You can’t anticipate how something like The Block will end, but it is the perfect ending for us. I think there is such a special relationship with sisters, and I’m so proud of both of us and how hard we worked.’

Charlotte added, ‘To end The Block on such a high note is so special. We never thought it would go like this.

‘I could not have had this experience with anyone else but Maddy. We have been in this from the beginning, so it’s an incredible feeling for both of us now.’

Maddy and Charlotte concluded: ‘This has been the experience of a lifetime. Winning this much money is life-changing for us. We can’t believe Adrian loved our house as much as we do!’

‘It’s a fantastic result,’ said host Scott Cam.

‘I’m so pleased for the girls to win it, and they deserve it. All of the houses have sold, and it’s a fantastic way to finish the 20th season of the show, with all five couples making some decent coin.’

The Sydney sisters entered into the heated 20th season midway through filming, after couple Paige Beechey and Jesse Maguire threw down their tools.

Despite their eventful entrance into the competition, they certainly made an impression with their finished house as they nabbed an impressive bid.

The sisters’ victory comes after they were tipped as the hot favourites by Block foreman Dan Riley and his wife Dani Wales.

Meanwhile, their co-stars also walked away from the auction pocketing millions.

Courtney and Grant kicked off the auction day with a stunning victory, selling their property to billionaire Adrian Portelli for a whopping $3.3 million.

This sale gave the pair an incredible profit of $1.35 million over their $1.95 million reserve, instantly propelling them into The Block’s all-time high earners.

Wallis began with an offer of ‘Two million dollars minus four cents,’ sparking amused reactions from the crowd.

Portelli continued his buying spree, swooping in at the second auction to claim another property.

He secured this home for $2.6 million, giving its owners a substantial profit of $650,000 over their $1.95 million reserve.

As the bidding soared, Scott Cam couldn’t resist a light-hearted dig at Kylie, reminding her of her earlier hesitation about attending the auction.

‘You’re sure you want to stay?’ he teased, as the offers continued to climb. ‘Thought so,’ he quipped, as Kylie watched on, glad to be part of the action.

However, Portelli once again came to the rescue, snapping up their home for $2.7 million.

This sale landed the boys a solid profit of $750,000, adding them to the season’s roster of big winners.

In an unexpected twist, Ricky and Haydn were the only team who chose to skip viewing their reserve price in advance, opting to go into the auction completely blind.

As the bids climbed higher, neither they nor host Scott Cam knew the exact profit they were making.

‘I think we’re at $720,000, or something like that…’ Cam speculated aloud as the offers soared, until someone handed him an envelope with the precise figures, revealing the duo’s impressive earnings.

Maddy and Charlotte meanwhile swiftly emerged as strong contenders after their arrival, but things were not always plain-sailing for the duo on the show.

They quickly found targets on their backs after revelations of their professional house-flipping experience emerged.

During the drama-packed series, the other cast members accused the fan-favourite sisters of ‘lying’ about their experience level.

When they were declared the winners of bathroom week, Kylie and Brad Baker notably refused to applaud their victory.

Host Scott Cam declared the sisters the winner of the week during Sunday night’s episode, and things exploded when team Kylie and Brad refused to clap.

Kylie and Brad also notably told the cameras that the competition was ‘rigged’ because the sisters were ‘the most hated people on The Block’.

Maddy said she found watching the season difficult to watch because of how she and her sister were treated by the other stars.

She said reliving the experience has been ‘triggering’ as she claimed the other cast members treated them ‘cruelly’.

‘These people are being cruel to us and I don’t really understand why,’ she confessed as she spoke about Kylie and Brad’s actions towards them.

‘We didn’t do anything to them to deserve that behaviour.

‘We strive to be kind to people in every circumstance, and then to have someone, who’s just blatantly choosing to be unsupportive and unkind, it’s just not a nice feeling at all.’

‘Considering they’re way older than us and have four children. You just kind of expect more from any human, really.’

Maddy also noted that entering the competition late, as well as being the youngest contestants, felt like being ‘the new kid at school’.

Meanwhile, her sister Charlotte added: ‘Before we’d even met Kylie she had made up her mind that she wasn’t going to like the new contestants.’

Fans of the series seem to agree with the duo, with the online response being overwhelmingly supportive of them – while lashing their rivals’ behaviour as ‘disappointing’, ‘horrifying’, and ‘immature’.

‘It’s time to say goodbye to The Block and this Dummy Bidder is going out with a f**kng Bang!’  Portelli, 35, posted to Instagram on Saturday.

At one moment, he was spotted celebrating with 2024 contestants Maddy and Charlotte as he happily embraced the reality renovators.

Recent Block season finales have essentially been a two-horse race, as Portelli and fellow multi-millionaire businessman Danny Wallis fought to out bid each other over several properties.

Between them, the cashed up pair have purchased 15 Block properties in recent years.

Portelli’s departure from The Block could spell and end to the record-breaking profits he has raked in for contestants, including 2023 winners Steph and Gian, who walked away with 1.65million from their sale and an additional $100,000 in prize money.

Maddy and Charlotte replaced Paige and Jesse, who exited in shocking scenes after producers were forced to intervene in their arguing.

The engaged couple were caught arguing off camera, but with their mics still attached as Jesse appeared to question their relationship.

Paige was heard saying angrily: ‘I don’t give a f**k how you feel – deal with it yourself,’ before threatening to quit the show.

By 11.30pm that night, their argument was loud enough to be heard throughout The Block site and executive producer Justin Sturzaker stepped in.

‘It seems like a relationship that’s getting pretty bad. Your neighbours can hear you too, you know?’ he said to them.

After being urged to speak to psychologists, the couple made the decision to withdraw from the competition and had a highly emotional exit.

Following their shock exit, host Scott Cam revealed the pair’s decision was theirs alone, clapping back at claims they were asked to leave.

‘We’ve always said we’re not doing anything important here, we’re just renovating,’ Scott said in the video.

‘Health, wellbeing, happiness, always comes first on The Block. We always make sure contestants’ wellbeing is number one.’

Since their departure, Paige has launched an explosive spray at producers on TikTok, claiming the way they handled her deteriorating mental health was ‘gross’.

Following their exit, Maddy and Charlotte took over the build and were responsible for aspects including the front garden, backyard, pool and guest bedroom.

They also showed off their talents by renovating the guest bedroom, laundry, office, living and dining areas, main bedroom, guest en-suite and kitchen.

Meanwhile, Paige and Jesse had been responsible for the kids’ room, main en-suite, guest bedroom and guest bathroom before their sensational exit.
