The Block fans divided after judges make a dramatic change on the show: ‘Are we being punk’d?’

Fans of The Block have been left divided after judges made a dramatic change to the ratings hit during Sunday’s room reveal.

The controversy started when judge Shaynna Blaze suggested that Blockheads should no longer use the term ‘master bedroom’.

Some viewers applauded the innovation while others claimed that the change was unnecessary.

The show’s judges elected to retire the words ‘master bedroom’ and ‘master ensuite’ because they thought the term had ‘undertones’ of ‘sexism’ and ‘colonialism.’

Instead they thought the term ‘main bedroom and main en suite’ would be more appropriate.

Shaynna made the suggestion during Sunday’s reveal and discussed whether the term ‘master bedroom’ now seemed out dated.

‘Something I just want to address from today, we are in the main bedroom and this is the main bedroom ensuite, and we’re so used to saying ‘master’ ensuite.’

‘But do you think that’s the right term to use these days?,’ she asked.

Fellow judge Darren Palmer then replied: ‘There are undertones of colonialism and sexism and I personally refer to it as a main bedroom. If something doesn’t make someone feel good and you can change it, change it.’

After the show aired some fans took to social media to complain about the change.

‘As a black person, I don’t see why their talk about ”master and main” was necessary. ‘It’s a damn bathroom,’ shared one viewer online.

Another fan mocked the renovation, writing: ‘The word ”master”, meaning main or principal, is sexist? Surely we’re being punk’d.’

‘I would be truly baffled if anyone was genuinely offended by ”master bedroom/ensuite”,’ agreed another before adding: ‘Surely they’re taking the pi**.’

‘Seems like a mountain out of a molehill kind of deal,’ said another.

However, some Block fans defended the change and agreed that language such as ‘master’ was outdated.

The term master bedroom comes from slavery, when men were in power,’ said one.

Names and terms change all the time, so I don’t see the big deal. Primary or main is a natural and generic term,’ argued another.

One fan, who supported the change, said they ‘doubted’ that anyone was actually ‘offended’ by the term ‘master bedroom’.

‘There’s nothing wrong with making changes for the better and adjusting language to be inclusive,’ they said.

Meanwhile, several fans shared the observation that in the U.S, reality shows based around real estate call the main bedroom, the ‘primary’ bedroom.

‘Master is definitely not PC over there due to their history with slavery,’ commented a fan.

Another said: ‘House Hunters (U.S) stopped using ‘master’ a while ago. It’s interesting they [on The Block] are discussing this now.’
