The Block’s executive producer Julian Cress hits back at fans’ biggest complaint about the show: ‘It’s just not real’
The Block’s executive producer Julian Cress has hit back at claims the Channel Nine renovation show focuses too much on drama.
Viewers complained on social media the latest season had too much drama, thanks to the show’s infamous ‘cheating scandal’.
‘It’s bulls**t. Translated, it’s “I don’t want to watch this big fight, I want to watch paint dry”,’ Julian said on Mitch and Mark’s Reality Reno podcast.

‘It’s just not real, and the ratings reflect that,’ he added.
Julian went on to say the popular reality show ‘strikes a balance’ between drama and renovations.
‘We’ve never just been about paint drying, we’ve always been about human drama. It used to be written in huge letters on our whiteboard in our office when we made the first series: HUMAN DRAMA,’ he said.
‘It was our reminder we weren’t just making a renovation show.’

During the latest season of The Block, Josh and Luke Packham and the Gucciones became embroiled in a cheating plot after Tanya obtained a photo of the show’s production schedule and sent it to Luke.
Anyone who saw the photo would have the advantage of being able to plan their specifications weeks in advance or pre-order something for a specific room.
The Gucciones and the Packham twins were each docked two points for a room reveal after the scandal was exposed.

Tanya broke down and finally took responsibility for taking the photo during Sunday night’s finale.
‘What I want to say is that I am obviously taking full responsibility for this situation and I am sorry, I am truly sorry. Yes, I did. I took the photograph,’ she said tearfully.
She added: ‘I am not a stupid woman but I did a stupid thing. We take responsibility for what happened and where it ended up after that was obviously out of my power, but I started it.’
