The Chase viewers left fuming as Anne Hegerty is given ‘unfair’ advantage over contestant

The Chase viewers were left fuming after Anne Hegerty was given an ‘unfair’ advantage with one of the questions posed to her.

Last night’s episode of the hit ITV show saw contestant Amit, from Flintshire, Wales, competing to win the jackpot.

During his one-on-one round against ‘The Governess’, the police officer was quizzed on everything from the global economy to pop music.

One of the last questions of the round was based on another hit ITV series.

Bradley asked the contestant: ‘Which comedian was runner-up to Harry Redknapp in the 2018 series of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here?’

The three possible answers Amit was given to choose from were Jo Brand, Roisin Conaty and Emily Atack.

After a short deliberation, Amit chose Emily Atack as his final answer.

At first, Bradley agreed and said: ‘It’s got to be, isn’t it?’

However, doubt then started to creep into his mind – and the presenter added: ‘Or did she win it on her own?’

Amit then responded: ‘Now you’ve said that, I’m not so sure.’

Offering her support from the sidelines, Amit’s teammate Abby called out: ‘I think she was the same series as Harry.’

Despite Amit’s relief that he had got the question right, he was disappointed to hear that Anne had also answered correctly.

The Governess – who actually appeared in that exact series – then proceeded to list the order in which the contestants finished that year.

Bradley Walsh said he ‘objected’ to the question after it was revealed that Anne had appeared on that very same series

She said: ‘Harry Redknapp won, Emily Atack second, John Barrowman third, and then Fleur East, and then [James Brittain-McVey], and then Nick Knowles and me.’

After Bradley’s face dropped, Anne asked: ‘Had you forgotten that my year?’

Trying to comfort Amit, Anne added: ‘The questions just come out randomly, I can’t do anything about it!’

Waving his hand in the air, Bradley jokingly called to producers off-stage and said: ‘Objection! Objection!

‘A question about about a show Anne was actually on?! We weren’t on it! We don’t know it.’

Pleading his case, Amit said: ‘I wasn’t on it!’

However, the chaser then shut down the conversation by saying: ‘Just as well you got it right anyway!’

That said, the ‘unfair’ question didn’t set well with viewers at home – who expressed their outrage on Twitter.

One fumed: ‘Hardly fair that question.’ Another added: ‘Easy peasy for Anne.’

Meanwhile, a third said: ‘Of course she’s getting that one right!’

During an appearance on This Morning in December 2018, Anne revealed one of her co-stars on The Chase encouraged her to sign up to I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!

She said: ‘I discussed it with Mark [Labbett]. Initially he said there wasn’t enough money in the world.

‘Then my agent said [producers] wanted to take you for lunch because they look after a few other things and were absolutely delightful. I found myself thinking I can actually do it.’

She continued: ‘Then it took nearly another month before everything is sorted out. Mark was in touch saying you really should do it.’
