The Color Purple enjoys the second-biggest Christmas Day opening in history as it takes in an impressive $18.1 million on its first day of wide release

The newly-released musical film The Color Purple made a smash at the box office on Christmas Day.

According to The Wrap, the feature, which is based on Alice Walker’s 1982 novel of the same name, took in an impressive $18.1 million from audiences on its first day of wide release in the United States.

The movie, which did not include the likes of Beyonce or Rihanna, also enjoyed the second-biggest Christmas Day opening in box office history, only falling behind 2009’s Sherlock Holmes, which earned $24.6 million.

It was also reported that 65% of The Color Purple’s audience was comprised of African-American individuals, and moviegoers over the age of 55 also made up one-fourth of the movie’s viewerbase.

The new version of The Color Purple takes inspiration from the 2005 Broadway adaptation of the classic novel.

Blitz Bazawule signed on to serve as the project’s director in August of 2020, and it was also revealed that Walker and her daughter Rebecca would act as producers that same month.

Much of the feature’s cast, which includes the likes of Taraji P. Henson, Colman Domingo, and Halle Bailey, was added from 2021 until 2022.

Several members of the cast were featured on the movie’s soundtrack album, which made its debut earlier this month.
