The doctor in the palm of your hand: World’s first ‘multiscope’ lets you test for everything from temperature and blood flow to lung and heart health

  • BeamO measures vital health data usually only collected during visits to a GP
  • It will be available first in the US for $249.95 after getting regulatory approval

Families can now carry out a doctor’s check-up from home with a new all-in-one ‘multiscope’.

Withings said BeamO measures vital health data that is usually only collected during visits to a GP surgery.

In under a minute, the handheld device uses a range of sensors to check for everything from temperature and blood flow to lung and heart health.

Unveiled for the first time at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the French health giant said it will be available first in the US for £195 ($249.95) after getting regulatory approval.

Portable and smaller than a smartphone, the BeamO is stacked with sensors and combines a thermometer, pulse oximeter, EKG, and stethoscope.

By lightly gripping the device, for example, it can measure users’ blood oxygen, heart rate, and carry out an ECG simultaneously.

It also has sensors that beam light waves to interpret blood flow patterns and temperature, as well as acoustic information form the chest and back.

The BeamO will alert users of any possible fevers or infections, and will detect possible cardiovascular issues including atrial fibrillation.

It will also automatically record all the family’s vitals on the Withings connected app, where users can see their full history of readings that can be shared with physicians.

Withings said the ‘revolutionary’ invention would now put the data produced from a visit to the doctor ‘in the palm of your hand’.

Founder Eric Carreel said: ‘BeamO is a transformative multiscope device. Once, body temperature was the only health scan routinely taken at home.

‘BeamO will revolutionize the measurement of the core vitals carried out during medical visits from the comfort of one’s own home.

‘This crucial data will provide a vital overview of overall health or warning signs of potential areas of concern. Instead of measuring these stats a couple of times a year in a clinical setting, it will be possible to assess them every day.’
