THE GREEN GUIDE: Earthborn Claypaint in Flora’s Tal

What’s the story?

Founded in 2002 by John Dison as an eco alternative to conventional paints. A town planner specialising in historic buildings, he understood that our built environment can negatively impact health.

Why should I buy?

It’s water-based (oil- and acrylic-free), breathable (ideal for older properties), with no nasty paint smell, and has a high clay content for a creamy consistency and matt finish. Claypaint uses locally sourced raw materials, with clay from pits in western Germany, where the paint is made.

Why shouldn’t I buy?

It’s made from mostly natural ingredients but does contain 0.1 per cent isothiazolinone, a synthetic preservative. It also has to be imported to the UK.

The extra mile

Earthborn was the first UK paint company to receive the EU Ecolabel for meeting the highest environmental standards. Its tins are made from 70 per cent recycled steel and can be further recycled; the foam-chip packaging is eco-friendly and biodegradable, and marketing material is printed on FSC paper.
