The Holiday Guru solves traveller queries from trips to the Caribbean and the New York

The Holiday Guru is always on call to answer your questions.

This week’s topics also include taking a ‘car train’ to Austria and visiting the Camargue in France.

Q. We will be in New York for two nights between cruises — any advice on seeing as much as possible in this fascinating city? Also, will we need visas?

Linda Warren, via email.

On a short trip to New York, pictured, be sure to visit the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and the Empire State Building

A. For tips on dining, Broadway shows and shopping, read Graham Boynton’s insightful report on New York. Be sure to visit the moving 9/11 Memorial & Museum (911memorial.org), as well as the Empire State Building (esbnyc.com) and the magnificent Grand Central station, where tours cost £23, (grandcentralterminal.com). You will require an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation), booked via esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta and costing £11.

Q. Our daughter is engaged and would like to get married abroad with a party of seven, on a £10,000 budget. Ideally they would stay at an all-inclusive hotel for a week. Can you help?

Sarah Quin, Bolton.

A. How about some sunshine in the Caribbean? Tropical Sky offers the plush, beachside Hilton La Romana Resort & Spa, on the south-east coast of the Dominican Republic, from £989pp all-inclusive. Wedding ceremonies are £680 extra (tropicalsky.co.uk).

Q. Since 1970 I have driven to Carinthia in Austria each year, but my family say that, now I’m 80, I am too old. How about a ferry then a ‘car train’?

Alan Conway, via email.

A. This is possible but complicated. Catch an overnight ferry, 11pm-8am, from Harwich to the Hook of Holland, from £98 one-way with a car and cabin (stenaline.co.uk). Then it is a three-hour drive to Dusseldorf, where you could take an overnight motorail service to Innsbruck from 8.54pm-9.14am; from £236 one-way for a car and shared sleeper compartment (railtravelshop.com/holidays/motorail).

The English-speaking call centre is excellent: 0031 71 5161 983). Then drive for about four hours to Carinthia. Or fly from Gatwick to Klagenfurt in Carinthia (from £54 return, easyjet.com) and hire a car (from £168 for a week, europcar.co.uk).

Q. My husband and I would like to visit the Camargue in France. Is there a best airport to fly to? Any suggestions on what to do, apart from visiting the wetlands and seeing the wildlife?

Christine Olson, Cheshire.

A golden sandy beach in the Camargue region in the south of France. To reach the Camargue, it is best to fly to Marseille

A. Fly to Marseille from about £20 return (easyjet.com), then hire a car for the hour-long drive to the beautiful river delta. Stay at the cosy Hotel Maison Volver in Arles, just north of the wetlands (maisonvolver.com).

Arles is famous for its Roman remains and association with Vincent van Gogh, who lived here. His works can be seen at the Foundation Vincent van Gogh (arlestourisme.com). Take day trips to Marseille or to the interesting cities of Nimes and Avignon, both about 45 minutes away by car (about-france.com/tourism/camargue.htm).

Q. I am looking for an all-inclusive Nile cruise — can you recommend a company?

Kevin Chandler, via email.

A. Yes, a good place to start is Red Sea Holidays (redseaholidays.co.uk).
