The Last of Us trailer reveals the first footage on ‘Outbreak Day’

HBO has released the first trailer for their highly-anticipated TV adaptation of the wildly popular video game The Last Of Us.

The video debuted on Monday – September 26 – which, in the world of The Last Of Us video game is known as Outbreak Day, when the cordyceps fungus first started spreading throughout the United States.

The video also offered quite the surprise for fans, revealing Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets) is part of the series, with the actress herself tweeting the trailer along with, ‘Surprise!’

The trailer begins with Joel (Pedro Pascal) walking through a city, as we see signs warning of cordyceps infections, while others are painting over a red emblem.

The trailer – set to Alone and Forsaken by Hank Williams – finds Joel in a building looking at a red painted text – ‘When you’re lost in the darkness,’ as we see a chain attached to his ankle.

Ellie (Bella Ramsey) is seen hiding in a tunnel with others while another shot shows a toppled building resting against another.

Joel and Ellie are seen in a dark room, watching one of the mutated creatures created by the Cordyceps fungus, as Joel signals for Ellie to be quiet. 

The trailer also shows Ellie meeting Marlene (Merle Dandridge) while smiling at Riley (Storm Reid) as they ride a merry-go-round.

There are also brief glimpses of Gabriel Luna’s Tommy and Nick Offerman’s Bill, while a character is heard saying, ‘Keep her alive you’ll set everything right.’

In the video game, it’s revealed that Ellie is immune to the disease caused by the Cordyceps virus, which makes her mission with Joel of vital importance to the survival of the human race.

The trailer also offers a brief glimpse at Lynskey’s character, revealed by TV Line to be Kathleen, described as, ‘the ruthless leader of a revolutionary movement in Kansas City.’

The trailer winds down with some explosive new footage… including a glimpse at a grotesquely mutated created from the virus.

The final shot shows Joel and Ellie standing side-by-side, as a voice is heard saying, ‘Save who you can save,’ as Joel and Ellie take off on horseback as the trailer ends.

The series also stars Anna Torv, Murray Bartlett and Jeffrey Pierce, while the actors who voiced Joel and Ellie in the video game – Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson – have signed on to play different characters in the series, though no further details are available.

The series, created by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and original video game creator Neil Druckmann – will be released on HBO Max in 2023.
